The ground reference data catalog consists of large forest inventory plots in which individual trees have been mapped and measured using traditional ground-based mapping methods. They generally consist of point files (.gpkg) for use in GIS. The datasets hosted here are generously shared by contributors under open licensing terms.

Important data use restriction: The OFO has designated a stratified subset of approximately 20% of ground reference plots to be excluded from training ML models that are intended for use by the broader forest mapping/ML community. For such applications, these plots are reserved for use as test data for model evaluation and intercomparison. The plots to be excluded from training are indicated by the value ’true’ in the metadata column ‘withheld_from_training’. See our documentation of the data withholding stratification procedure.
